History of the breed Welsh Pony Section A

The Welsh A section pony is the oldest British pony breed. Its origins date back to Julius Caesar, who established a stud farm at Lake Baly. He probably also had these ponies bred with Arabian Thoroughbreds. Section A is the smallest and probably the oldest of all Welsh ponies. A studbook was established in the early 20th century. It includes one of the most important stallions, Dyoll Starlight.

The head is pleasing with Arabian features, the neck is muscular, the chest is deep. The back is longer and firm, the rump is straight with a high set tail. The limbs are shorter, well muscled with good hooves. The coat may be white, brown, pure or black. At withers they are no more than 120 cm.

The Welsh Pony Section A is an excellent pack pony and as a riding horse for children. It is also invaluable in breeding other breeds.
