The breed originated in the 19th century in the American state of Tennessee. It was originally intended to be an all-purpose horse for farming and riding, capable of covering long distances. Ancestors included Spanish horses, English Thoroughbreds, Morgans, American trotters and American riding horses. A colt named Black Allan was born. He had a special gait, called a by-the-way, which he then passed on to all his offspring. He gave birth to a new breed that was able to walk very long distances quickly and comfortably.
