It is a very old breed that has its origins in the 10th century. It was bred by Benedictine monks who needed a versatile horse under saddle for farming. Its ancestor was probably a local horse of the Schwyler breed. In the 17th century, it interbred with Turkish, Italian, Spanish and Friesian horses. This proved to be a good one and they continued with French, Irish, English and German horses. This created an established and successful breed.
