History of the breed Sorraia

These ponies are descendants of the original horses living on the Iberian Peninsula. They were very important in the creation of other breeds, such as the Spanish horse, the lusitano, the alter-real and, after being imported to South America, contributed to the creation of the breeds there. The Sorraia was used for agricultural work and as a riding pony. Today the breed is almost extinct. Only one wild herd remains.

Physique of the Sorraia breed

The Sorraia bears distinctive Spanish features. The head is heavy, mostly clavate, the neck is shorter, muscular and arched. The chest is deep, the back shorter and firm. The back is slightly sloping with a relatively high set tail. The limbs are shorter but strong, with good hooves. The coat is fawn or grey, always with an eel plough. They grow to an average of 130 cm at the withers.

Use of the Sorraia breed

Sorraia was a good horse in agriculture and riding pony gauchos. It has been used in breeding to breed other breeds. Today it has no use and is almost extinct.
