The breed originated during the 17th century in Great Britain, Its ancestors were local, Flanders and Friesian horses. The breed originated with the name English Black. However, during the World Wars, its numbers declined and were restored mainly due to breweries choosing it for representation purposes. Today, the Shire horse is known as the largest horse breed in the world.
