History of the Shetland pony breed

The Shetland pony originated in the Shetland Islands and its origins are unknown. Its ancestors were probably the original wild ponies. It is possible that they were later influenced by Celtic ponies. It is one of the strongest ponies and was therefore used extensively in agriculture, in mines and as a soumar. The Shetland pony became very popular in the USA, where they bred a more powerful form called the American Shetland.

Physique of the Shetland Pony

The head is pleasing and broad, the neck is shorter, muscular and arched. The chest is deep, the back shorter and firm, the rump round and muscular. The limbs are shorter, firm with good joints and good hooves. The gills are very dense. Coat can be any colour, not exceeding 105 cm in height at withers.

The Shetland pony was originally a very versatile animal. It was used in agriculture, for traction and as a cargo pony. Today it is a popular sport pony for children.
