Shagya Arabic

Name: Shagya Arab
Origin: Hungary
Height: 150 cm
Colour: white
Category: Warm-blooded

History of the breed Shagya Arab

The breed originated in the Hungarian stud farm in Babolno, which was originally intended for breeding Arabian Thoroughbreds. However, the Hungarians wanted a larger horse, but with all the characteristics of the Arabian. Selective breeding began and the stallion Shagya was brought from Syria, passing on all his traits to his offspring. Other important stallions were Siglavy Bagdady, Gazal, Kemir, Koheilan, Yussuf, O'Bayan, Kuhaylan Zaid and Mersuch. A new strain of Arabian called the Shagya Arabian was created and recognized as a breed in 1978. Unfortunately, after World War II their numbers were greatly reduced and few representatives of this breed are still bred today.

Physique of the Shagya Arab

The physique is very similar to the Shagya Arabian, but a little more robust. The head is of the Arabian type, but does not have such a pronounced pike profile. The neck is slender and arched, the back short, straight and firm. The rump is strong with a high set tail. The limbs are longer, strong and with good quality hooves. The coat is mostly white, but other colours may occur. At withers they measure 150 cm on average.

Use of the Shagya Arab

The Shagya Arab is a popular riding horse. They are good sport horses, excelling most in endurance riding. However, they can also be used in lighter gaits.

Character of the Shagya Arab

The Shagya Arabian has retained all the characteristics of the Arabian Thoroughbred, such as fire, liveliness, stamina, but also kindness, docility and loyalty to man.
