History of the Murges horse breed

The origin of this breed is in the Murge region of southeastern Italy. Its ancestors were probably Neapolitan, Berber, Aveline and Italian draught horses and Arabian thoroughbreds. In the 15th century they were the favourite riding horses of the Italian army. But then the breed declined and became extinct. It was only revived in the 20th century in a more refined form than the original Murges horse.

The head is clavate, the neck is muscular. The shoulder blades are sloping, the chest is deep. The back is short and straight, the rump is sloping with a relatively high set tail. The limbs are firm with small joints. The hooves are of good quality. The hooves are dense. The coat is always black and measures 150-160 cm at the withers.
