History of the breed Missouri Fox Trotter

The breed originated in the Ozark Mountains in the early 19th century. Its ancestors were horses of various breeds belonging to American settlers. These included the Morgan, the Berber, the Spanish horse, the Arabian and the English Thoroughbred. Important stallions in the breeding were Brimmer, Old Skip, Chief and Cotham Dare. They were mostly English Thoroughbreds and American horses. The result was a horse with an innate gait called a by the way, which is very comfortable when travelling long distances.

The head is attractive with a straight profile, the neck is muscular, and the shoulders are strong. The shoulder blades are sloping, the chest is deep. The back is straight and strong, the rear muscular and the legs strong with good joints. The hooves are of good quality. The coat can be any colour, but most often is brindle with badges. At withers he measures 145-160 cm.
