History of the Knabstrup breed

The origin of the breed dates back to the 19th century and its ancestor is the spotted mare Flaebehoppen. This mare had Spanish ancestry, which is also evident in modern Knabstrups. The mare was bred to a Frederiksborg stallion. Her mottled grandson Mikkel is considered the founder of the breed. In the late 19th century, however, the numbers of these horses began to decline, so in 1933 the Spotted Horse Rescue Society was founded and the number of Knabstrup horses rose again.
