History of the breed Jutland Horse

The breed dates back to the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, these horses were the favourite riding horses of knights because they are very strong and can carry heavy armour over long distances. In the 18th century, the Jute horse was crossed with the Frederiksborg, which improved its gaits. Among its ancestors were Cleveland bay horses, and Yorkshire draught horses.

Physique of the Jutland Horse

The head is heavy, the neck is muscular with a crest and high set. The chest is deep, the back short, the rump muscular. The limbs are short, strong but usually with weak joints. The whiskers are abundant and start to grow quite high. The coat is usually pure, but may also be brownish and raven. They grow to an average height of 157 cm at the withers.

The Jute horse was formerly used extensively in agriculture, where it has now been replaced by technology. Today's use is more representative: it pulls the carts of the Carlsberg brewery.
