History of the Hucul breed

The breed originated in the Polish Carpathian Mountains and is probably the oldest pony breed in Europe. Among its ancestors, the now extinct tarpan played an important role, interbreeding with Mongolian horses. The first Hucul stud was established in Romania, where these ponies were selectively bred to preserve as much as possible the original form of the breed. During the world wars, its numbers were greatly reduced and it was not until the 1970s that they were restored, when a studbook was also established.

Physique of the Hucul breed

The head is primitive, the neck short and muscular. The shoulder blades allow a relatively high action of the front legs. The chest is deep, the back is compact, strong, the rump, muscular. The limbs are short, firm with good hooves. The coat is brown, fawn or black, with a dark eel stripe always visible. At withers he measures 122 - 133 cm.

Use of the Hucul breed

The Hucul is a versatile pony used in agriculture and as a riding horse. Due to its nature, it is an ideal pony for children, but is also sought after by adults as a reliable recreational and touring horse.

Huculs are very strong and hardy ponies. They have a gentle and friendly disposition, are obedient, well-mannered and docile. They are also excellent jumpers.
