In the 16th century they interbred with French and Spanish horses, and in the 19th century with Hackneys, Fells and Dales ponies. There are also signs of Arabian thoroughbreds on them. There used to be two types of these ponies: a smaller one from the Western Isles and a larger one from the mainland. Today, these races have merged.

The head is an attractive Arabian type, the neck is long with a crest. The back is short, the rump sloping and muscular. The limbs are shorter but firm with strong joints. The hooves are hard and of good quality. The coat may be white, brown or black, often with an eel stripe. White badges should be as small as possible. Cock height does not exceed 145 cm.
