History of the breed Hanoverian Warmblood

The origins of the breed date back to the 18th century, when a stud farm was established in Celle. There, selective breeding took place between thoroughbreds and warmbloods with the aim of breeding a universal horse for saddle and farming. They were then crossed with English Thoroughbreds and the Hanoverian horse acquired a lighter frame suitable for army cavalry. During the Napoleonic Wars, horse numbers were reduced and only 30 breeding stallions remained. Later, the English Thoroughbreds and the Thracians created an excellent sporting breed.

Physique of the Hanoverian Warmblood

The head is pleasing, the neck longer. The back is straight and long, the rump muscular. The limbs are firm with well-movable joints. The hooves are strong and well shaped. The coat may be white, brown, pure or black, and at the withers they grow to 165 cm in diameter.

Use of the Hanoverian Warmblood

In the past, Hanoverian horses were used as riding horses and as draft animals for lighter work in agriculture. Today they are exclusively sport horses with a background in dressage and parkour, where they achieve excellent results.

Character of the Hanoverian Warmblood

Hanoverian horses are friendly, helpful, studious and hard-working. They have a lively temperament, are bright and agile.
