History of the Hackney breed

The breed was created in the 18th century by crossing the Norfolk and Yorkshire Trotter. The Norfolks were known for their very fast trot and contributed to the creation of a large number of breeds. Hackney owes its origins to the Ramsdale family, who owned the Norfolk stallions Wroot's Pretender and Phenomenon. These were bred to Yorkshire mares. In 1833 the Hackney Horse Stud Book was established. Hackney, unlike the Norfolk and Yorkshire trotters, managed to survive the advent of the railroad due to its attractive appearance and extremely high foreleg action. This moved the originally working breed into show rings.
