History of the Gelderland breed

The breed originated in the Dutch province of Gelderland more than 100 years ago. Originally they were versatile horses for agricultural work and riding. Their ancestors are Spanish , Norfolk, Neapolitan, Normandy and local okne. Later Anglo-Arabs, Furios, Holsteins, Eagle Trotters, English Thoroughbreds, Hackneys and Oldenburgs were also used. This created a highly versatile and hardy breed.

Body conformation of the Gelderland breed

The head is long with a straight profile, the neck is muscular, the back is straight and long, the straight back is well muscled. The tail is set high. The limbs are shorter, muscular with strong joints and hard hooves. The coat is mostly pure, but whites, browns and ravens may also occur. At the withers they grow to 155 - 165 cm.

Use of the Gelderland breed

The Gelderland is a very versatile breed with excellent jumping ability. It can also be harnessed or used as a touring horse.

By nature, they are quiet horses. They are sturdy, hardy, docile and usually jump well. However, they are not fast. However, they compensate for this with diligence and willingness.
