History of the Galiceño breed

The breed originated in Mexico thanks to the horses brought to South America by Hernando Cortez. Its ancestors are probably Spanish Galician ponies and Portuguese garranos. In the mid-20th century, Galiceños made their way to the United States, where they became very popular almost overnight.

Physique of the Galiceño breed

The head is pleasing, the neck is short and muscular, the back is short and compact. The back is sloping, the tail low set. The limbs are firm and muscular. The hooves are relatively small. The coat may be white, brown, pure or black. At the withers they grow to 140 cm.

Use of the Galiceño breed

Galiceños are working ponies used primarily on ranches. However, they are also suitable riding ponies for children and are sought after by adults as quality touring horses.

The nature of the Galiceño breed

Galiceños are reliable and intelligent animals. They are sturdy and hardy as well as willing, teachable and easy to handle. They are popular with children and adult gauchos.
