History of the breed French Trotter

Selective breeding of trotters began in France in the mid-19th century. At that time, they crossed Normandy horses with English Thoroughbreds, Hunters, Norfolks and American riding horses. The first horses tended to be coarser and more powerful, but crossbreeding with English Thoroughbreds gave them softer features.

Physique of the French Trotter

This breed is not completely uniform in type. They usually have a larger dry head, the neck is well muscled, and the shoulder blades are sloping. The back is broad, the rump muscular. The limbs are firm, muscular with good joints and hard hooves. The coat is usually brown or pure, but may also be white and raven. At the withers, they measure an average of 165 cm.

Uses of the French Trotting Dog

As the name of the breed suggests, these horses were bred for trotting races, where they still figure today. However, they are also popular riding horses.

The nature of the French Trotting breed

The French Trotter is a hardy horse with a lively temperament. They are willing, but have inherited a difficult nature from English Thoroughbreds.
