History of the breed Frederiksborg

In the 16th century, King Frederik II of Denmark established a stud farm where he concentrated Spanish and Neapolitan horses. He wanted to breed an all-purpose horse for the court, for the army, and for sledding. Gradually these horses became very popular and many quality breeding animals were exported from Denmark. In the 19th century, the stud farm even had to close due to a lack of horses. Since the middle of the 20th century there have been efforts to bring the breed back to life using Arabian and English Thoroughbreds, Friesian and Oldenburg horses. Although their numbers are still low, they have had a great influence on the breeding of other breeds.

Physique of the Frederiksborg breed

The head is pleasing with Spanish markings, the neck is shorter and muscular, set high. The shoulders are steep, the back straight and long. The back is muscular with a high set tail. The limbs are muscular dry with strong joints and good hooves. The coat is exclusively pure, averaging 160 cm at withers.

Use of the Frederiksborg breed

The Frederiksbogr is an excellent riding horse. He works equally well in the backcountry as a carriage horse. They are also important in improving other breeds.
