History of the breed Fell Pony

A breed very similar to the Dales ponies. Originated in Cumberland. Its ancestors are the Galloway pony and the Old Friesian horse, both breeds now extinct. The Galloway pony was a hardy Scottish pony that was, among other things, the ancestor of the English Thoroughbred. Today, there is an effort to breed Flemish ponies of the purest blood possible.

Physique of the Fell pony breed

The head is small and attractive, the neck is arched, the chest arched. The back is straight, the rump muscular, the tail high set. The limbs are firm with good joints and rows. The hooves are of good quality. The gills are thick and long. The coat is usually brown or black, but whites may occur. White badges are undesirable. At the withers they measure 140 cm in diameter.

The Fell Pony was formerly used in mines and as draft animals. Today they are popular riding ponies with children.
