History of the Exmoor pony breed

A breed found in the county of Exmoor and living a semi-wild life. However, its numbers have declined significantly and it is now bred artificially. Its ancestors are probably the tarpan and the Przewalski's horse. It has distinctive primitive markings and is similar to prehistoric horses. They are highly adapted to life in harsh conditions and have retained the characteristics of wild horses.

Physique of the Exmoor pony breed

The head is of primitive type, the neck is short with muscular. The chest is deep, the back longer and firm. The rump is sloping with a well set tail. The limbs are short, firm and hard-hoofed. The gills are thick and slightly wavy. The coat has a wool-like undercoat which provides good thermal insulation and the topcoat is oily to repel water. The colour is brown with primitive markings such as an eel stripe. At the withers they grow to 120-130 cm.

The Exmoor pony is primarily a semi-wild horse. As a riding pony, it is used more for recreational and touring riding.

By nature, they are shy, suspicious ponies and have a developed sense of direction. They are hardy, resilient and tenacious. As riding animals they are characterized by their strength, good handling and are suitable for children.
