History of the breed Dartmoor Pony

A very old breed with a troubled past. The Dartmoor is one of the original English breeds that still lives a semi-wild lifestyle in the Dartmoor area, although most of these ponies are now bred in captivity. In the 19th century the ponies were bred with Shetland ponies and almost became extinct as a result. They were then restored by the Welsh Mountain Pony and the Fells Pony. They experienced a further crisis during the First and Second World Wars, when their numbers declined rapidly. Fortunately, the breed was saved.

Physique of the Dartmoor Pony

The head is pleasing, the neck muscular. The back is straight, the rump sloping. The limbs are firm with shorter shanks. The gills are thick and long. The coat is dark, usually black or brown. They grow to an average height of 125 cm at the withers.

The Dales Pony is a popular sport pony for children. They can handle parkour and also have good gaits for dressage. However, they are also good touring and recreational ponies and are used in traction.
