History of the Camargue pony breed

The Camargue pony originates from the Rhone Delta region in southern France. It is a very old breed and its ancestors were solutre horses. They were later influenced by the Berber horses that came to France during the Moorish wars. Ponies live a semi-wild life in herds and fight hard for their existence. They are used by French cowboys and after work are released back into the wild.

Body structure of the Camargue pony breed

The head is heavy and large, the neck is very short. The shoulder blades are steep and allow for a comfortable walk and canter. The back is short and strong, the rump sloping with a low-set tail. The legs are strong and muscular, the hooves hard. Stst is exclusively white, with an average of 140 cm at the withers.

Use of the Camargue pony breed

Camargue horses are used by French cowboys called Guardians on farms where a special breed of black bulls are bred for bullfighting. But they are also excellent recreational and tourist horses.

They are extremely hardy and modest animals. They are lively, spirited and athletic. They do not lack courage. They have all the characteristics of wild horses.
