History of the Breton horse breed

A breed originally from Brittany with an interesting history. Its ancestors are Celtic horses that were crossed with Arabian thoroughbreds during the Crusades. This gave rise to different types of this breed, for example Sommier Breton and Rossier. The Sommier Breton was heavier, mainly used in agriculture, while the Rossier, on the other hand, was lighter and had an innate waywardness. He thus became a sought-after military horse. In the 19th century, they were crossed with Precherons, Ardennes and Boulogne cold bloods and the Breton horse was created.

Body structure of the Breton horse breed

The head is attractive, the neck has a prominent crest. The shoulders are massive, the back short, the hindquarters bent and muscular. Limbs are dry, firm, with wrinkles. The pasterns are well formed, the hooves are large. The coat is always pure, at the withers they reach a size of 150-160 cm.

Use of the Breton horse breed

The Breton horse is still used in agriculture as a work horse. It is also bred for chariot and drag competitions.

The nature of the Breton horse breed

Breton horses are more temperamental, but still manageable and friendly. They are persistent and work with unusual enthusiasm, making them sought-after draft animals.
