History of the Boulogne cold-blooded breed

An old breed originating from northwestern France, which was officially recognized only in the 17th century. His ancestors are heavy horses from Roman times that were crossed with Arabian thoroughbreds and Berbers. The number of Boulogne horses declined rapidly during the Second World War, but today its survival is ensured by the French National Studs company.

Thanks to their Arab ancestry, they are very elegant cold-blooded people. The head is delicate with prominent eyes, the neck is arched with a prominent crest. The shoulder blades are well bent and allow quite a high action of the forelimbs. The chest is wide, the back is longer, the back is round and muscular. The limbs are strong with quality joints, the withers are short and the hooves are large. The tail is usually thick and shaggy. The fur is mostly white, brown and red can also occur. They tend to be 150 - 170 cm at the withers.

Use of the Boulogne cold-blooded breed

Previously, Boulogne horses were used as work and carriage horses. They also carried knights into battle and were good war steeds. Today, they no longer have practical use and are raised for meat. They are also used as representative horses in the reconstruction of medieval battles.
