History of the Berber horse breed

Berbers originate from the region of Morocco, Algeria and Tunis and, like Arabian thoroughbreds, had a great influence on the development of other breeds. They were used in the breeding of Spanish horses and are probably their direct ancestors. However, they made the most of the breeding of the English thoroughbred. The Godolphin Berber stallion Babr was the founder of a very successful line of racehorses. Today, however, the Berber horse is crossed with other breeds and therefore there are several different types of this breed.

Body structure of the Berber horse breed

The head is narrow, the eyes are large. The neck is muscular, slightly arched. The shoulders are strong, the shoulder blades are steep and the chest is deep but narrow. The rump is round with a low-set tail. The limbs are slender and strong, the hooves hard and of good quality. The fur was originally dark, today it can have any single color. The height is usually 140 - 150 cm.

Use of the Berber horse breed

Berbers are hardy and strong riding horses. They are also used as donkeys. They are very agile in mountainous terrain. Today, however, it is an almost forgotten breed that can only be seen in their homeland.

Nature of the Berber horse breed

This breed is very hardy and persistent. Like the thoroughbred Arabian, it is resistant to extreme temperatures. It is undemanding to food, it can withstand a long time without water. It is also brave, strong and well controlled.
