History of the Ariège horse breed

This breed is also known as the Meren horse. It comes from the French mountains. The Ariège horse is a very old breed, probably a descendant of the original wild horses. It was later influenced by the oriental blood of Arabian and Berber horses. At the beginning of the 20th century, targeted breeding of originally wild horses began, and in 1948 a stud book was established.

Body structure of the Ariéžský horse breed

The head is pleasing, the ears are small, the mane is rich and wavy. The neck is short. The body structure is massive, the chest is deep, the back is long and muscular, the back is bent and the tail is set low. The limbs are short, strong, the hooves are hard and of good quality, so they do not need to be forged. The fur is exclusively black, they are usually 132 - 148 cm at the withers.

Use of the Ariéž horse breed

The Ariéž horse is used as a working breed in places where a tractor cannot reach, they are good donkey drivers and are still more popular riding horses for children and adults. They have comfortable gaits and don't get tired easily.
