History of the American Riding Horse breed

The breed comes from the state of Kentucky, where it originated in the 19th century. Settlers crossed Canadian and Narragansett crossbreeds to breed a versatile horse. Later, Morgan, Hackney and English Thoroughbred were added. This resulted in a pleasing horse with high leg action.

Body structure of the American Riding Horse breed

The head is small, the neck muscular, set high. Shoulders and shoulder blades allow for high limb action. The chest is arched, the back straight. The tail is set high, often trimmed to be carried even higher. The limbs are long, slender, the hooves are forged with special horseshoes to increase the action. The American riding horse has a specific stance where the whole body leans forward and the hind legs stay far behind the body. The fur is mainly pure, but the colors can be white, bay, crow, palomino and swimmer.
