This is a strong, muscular dog with a square build and a deep, medium-wide chest. The head is broad and tapers gently to a bluntly pointed nose. The ears are V-shaped, set high and folded forward. The legs are straight and muscular. And the tail is high set, horizontally carried and naturally long (formerly it was curled).

History of the Small Schnauzer breed

Schnauzer-like dogs appeared as early as the 16th century in the sheep region of Bavaria. Their ancestors were probably dogs of the Poodle and German Wirehaired Schnauzer type. They were used for rat hunting, as watchdogs and as carriage dogs.
