This is a dog with graceful appearance and movement that has a deep, relatively narrow chest and straight back. He carries his long head high with a deep, square nose at the end. His ears are medium sized, low hanging and close to his head. The legs are straight and muscular. Its tail is of medium length, low set and carried at or below the level of the back.

It is a kind, intelligent, friendly dog with a calmer disposition than other Setters. He enjoys the company of people, children and pets. It is the largest, strongest and toughest of all setters, being slower in hunting but working more consistently in return.

The coat is short on the head and the front of the legs. On the neck, back and sides, long, soft, straight or slightly wavy. On the ears, lower part of the chest and on the back of the legs the long hair forms curtains.

The English, Irish, and Gordensetter descend from various spaniels and pointers. The different breeds of Setters were practically indistinguishable from each other as late as the end of the 18th century. It was not until the mid-19th century that the breeds of setters were distinguished on the basis of their characteristic colouring.
