History of the Afghan Hound

This breed is very old, its depiction can be found in four thousand year old Afghan paintings. It probably originated in the Middle East, from which it came to Afghanistan, where it was used for hunting gazelles and wolves. It did not reach Europe until the second half of the 19th century and its standard was recognised in the first decade of the 20th century.

Advantages - why get an English Greyhound

This breed is known for its elegance, speed and calm nature. Greyhounds are very friendly and loving dogs that are well suited to a family environment. They have excellent temperaments and are often very calm inside the house, making them ideal for apartments and families with elderly people. Due to their long history as hunting dogs, they also have a strong hunting instinct, but are often calm and relaxed outside of walking. They are also relatively easy to care for because they have a short coat that is low maintenance.

Disadvantages - why not get an English Greyhound

These dogs are known for their great speed and hunting instinct, which can be a problem in an environment with small pets or out in the open where they might chase prey. Despite their speed and athletic appearance, they are often surprisingly calm in the home environment and need plenty of physical activity to avoid destructive behaviour. Greyhounds are also prone to injuries due to their physique, which should be taken into consideration when walking and exercising. Another potential drawback is their sensitive nature and sometimes low tolerance to cold, which may require special care and security in colder weather.
