History of the Basset Hound

Advantages - why get a Basset Hound

These dogs are known for their friendly and calm nature, making them great family dogs suitable for children and older people. They have an excellent temperament, are patient and get along well with other pets. Basset Hounds are also intelligent and enjoy the company of people, making them great companions for a variety of households. Their distinctive long ears and bright eyes add a special charm to their appearance. In addition, they have a short, low-maintenance coat, and their activities can be adapted to both outdoor and indoor environments.

Disadvantages - why not get a Basset Hound

Dogs tend to be stubborn and can be slower to train, requiring patience and consistency on the part of owners. Their hunting instinct and strong sense of smell is also pronounced, which can lead them to follow tracks or follow interesting scents, which can be a challenge when walking off-leash. Basset hounds are also prone to being overweight due to their slow metabolism and love of food, which requires controlling their diet and getting plenty of physical activity. Their long ears and low stature also contribute to making them prone to ear and skeletal problems, and this requires regular care and vet checks.
